Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, February 26, 2015

Call to order: 6:00 p.m.

Commission Members Present: Tauber, Manis, Holmes, Fraze

Present from the public: K. Holmes

1. Election of Officers: By acclimation: President—Donna Tauber; Vice-President—Joe Manis; Secretary—Martha Fraze; Treasurer—Ann Holmes

2. Treasurer’s Report: Balance of $2451.83, plus a $125.00 donation for the Farley Cemetery yet to be deposited.

3. Ken will check on the status of GIS corrections.

4. Farley Cemetery: A visit was made—access to the cemetery is very poor and the land owner is only mildly cooperative. Donna received an estimate of $3500.00 for installation of a wrought iron fence. The family is very interested in getting something done about resetting stones and general rehabilitation of the cemetery. Need to pursue the possibility of public access.

5. Hess and Clear Springs cemeteries need stone repair. J. Manis would like to contract with the Commission to do the work.

6. A. Holmes presented the Courier article on "Get Involved", a workshop by the
Chamber of Commerce to match organizations with volunteers. She suggested someone from the Commission should attend. Donna will pursue this.

7. Ann and Ken Holmes will present a speech to the March meeting of the Knightstown BPW regarding the Commission and its work.

8. M. Fraze gave an update on the progress of the Commission website and asked for input re: inclusions. She hopes to get the website up by the end of March.

9. J. Manis reported that the sign for Reynolds Cemetery has arrived and is ready to be installed.

Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, March 26, 2015

Call to Order: 5:57 p.m.

 Commission Members Present:  Tauber, Manis, B. Glascock, A. Holmes, Fraze

 Present from the public: K. Holmes, J. Glascock, B. Paugh

 

The minutes from the February meeting were approved as presented.

 The Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $2707.57.  Manis moved to accept; B. Glascock seconded. Motion carried.

 Old Business:

     1.  Donna committed the Commission for a booth at the Chamber of Commerce “Get Involved” block party to be held Tuesday, May 5th in the Little Gym at the old YMCA from 2-7 p.m.  Discussion was held re: what to include in the booth—a display board with a map of Henry County cemetery locations, photos of projects, brochures.  A. Holmes moved to reimburse whoever buys the display board; B. Glascock seconded; motion carried.

     2. K. Holmes reported he is still working with the county on correcting the GIS information.

     3. Farley cemetery is still at status quo until the land owner returns from Florida in April.

     4. Still organizing work at the Hess and Clear Springs cemeteries.

     5. Ken and Ann Holmes gave an update on their presentation to the BPW—several people showed an interest in the Commission’s work.

     6.  Manis reported that the Reynolds sign will be put up when the weather permits.

     7.  Fraze gave an update on the website and asked more questions re: inclusions.

 New Business:

     1.  Tauber brought up the need for a quarterly newsletter to be given to the newspaper—including a recap of items from the minutes and upcoming projects.  Fraze will do this.

     2. Upcoming projects—work will continue at Hodgson Cemetery.  Other projects will be subject to requests and number of volunteers available.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.  The next scheduled meeting is April 23, 2015.

Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, April 23, 2015

Call to Order: 6:00 p.m.

Commission Members Present: D. Tauber, J. Manis, M. Fraze

Advisory Board Members present: B. Paugh

The minutes from the March meeting were approved as presented.

There was no Treasurer’s report.

Old Business:

1. Activity in Farley Cemetery is postponed indefinitely due to lack of property owner’s cooperation. $175.00 has been contributed toward work on this cemetery.

2. Discussion was held re: the Chamber of Commerce Get Involved Block party. Items for the display and door prizes were finalized. Tauber, Manis, Fraze, and Paugh will work the booth.

3. Fraze gave an update on the website.

4. Manis announced the pioneer sign for Reynolds Cemetery has been installed.

New Business:

1. Manis presented information and a sample product from Monuments and More. These will be considered for possible headstone replacement material.

2. Tauber will check with Ken Holmes re: a calendar for use of the Commission’s trailer.

3. Tauber will ask Jeannie Regan-Dinius re: hosting a meeting of the county cemetery commissions.

Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, June 25, 2015

Call to Order 6:00 p.m.

Commission Members present: D. Tauber, J. Manis, M. Fraze, B. Glascock, A. Holmes

Advisory Board Members present: J. Glascock, K. Holmes, B. Paugh

The minutes from the May meeting were approved as presented.

Treasurer’s report was verified at $2707.57

Old Business:

1. The Chamber of Commerce sent Donna a list of interested people who signed up at the Block Party.

2. Farley Cemetery work is on hold until fall because crops have been planted. Donna would like to get a military stone for Matt Farley, a Revolutionary War veteran. She will contact our VA office for information re: getting one.

3. Saturday, September 19th from 1-4 p.m. is scheduled for a meeting for all interested county cemetery commissions. Our group will provide refreshments. Jeannie Reagan-Dinius will be the speaker. Donna will work with her to be sure that commission formation and funding are part of the presentation. We will also invite the County Council, County Commissioners, County Trustees, and Rep. Tom Saunders.

4. J. Glascock and K. Holmes have walked through Clear Springs Cemetery to see what needs to be done there.

5. K. Holmes is still working with Bruce at the county GIS office. Their Beacon program doesn’t show cemeteries where they are located, so Ken is working with Bruce to get the cemeteries where they belong.on the county’s map

6. Installation of the John Pressel Heritage sign will be this Saturday. Tom Saunders will speak.

7. The website is scheduled to be launched July 3rd.

8. M. Fraze is working on new driving directions for the cemeteries, as well as working with the Land Trust re: what plants can be removed from those three cemeteries. She has also given the Indiana Historical Bureau an updated list of cemeteries with heritage signs, including pictures.

New Business:

1. B. Paugh brought up Herr Cemetery as a possible work project. She also had some questions about Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown—apparently their mausoleum is falling down. This is something for the town cemetery association to address.

2. Day of Caring is scheduled for September 11th. We need to be considering a project for that day.

3. D. Tauber asked K. Holmes to suggest strongly to Bruce at the GIS office that new county maps include the locations of the county’s cemeteries.

Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, July 23, 2015

Call to Order: 5:57 p.m.

Commission Members Present: D. Tauber, J. Manis, M. Fraze, A. Holmes, B. Glascock

Advisory Board Members Present: K. Holmes, J. Glascock

The minutes from the June meeting were approved as corrected. (NB item 1 should have been Holland Cemetery instead of Herr.)

The Treasurer’s report remains the same. Joe moved to approve; Bev seconded. Motion carried.

Old Business:

1. Donna still intends to contact the local VA office regarding a marker for Farley Cemetery Revolutionary War soldier.

2. Donna reported that the installation of the John Pressel Cemetery Heritage sign was well done.

3. Martha reported that the website will be up by July 3rd, although some areas still need work.

4. Regarding the all-state Cemetery Commission meeting scheduled for September 19: Jeannie Reagan-Dinius will be the speaker, the site will be the NCHC Library auditorium; we will provide refreshments; letters have been sent to all the other commissioners; a table will be set up with copies of our brochures and the display board; pictures will be taken.

5. Ken is still working with Bruce on lost cemeteries.

6. Regarding Holland Cemetery, the township trustee is willing for us to work there as long as it is not left in worse condition. We want that permission in writing.

New Business:

1. The question of relocating stones from the lost Hebron Cemetery was discussed. Roy Brummett apparently has 4 of the stones. It was suggested that a stone be erected somewhere to commemorate those who were originally buried in the cemetery. The family and the farmer who owns the land need to be contacted.

2. Research needs to be done to see if burial records for the old part of Glen Cove Cemetery can be found.

3. A decision needs to be made regarding what cemetery to work on for Day of Caring.

Henry County Cemetery Commission Minutes, September 24, 2015

Call To Order: 6:00 p.m.

Commission Members present: Donna Tauber, Joe Manis, Martha Fraze

Advisory Board Members present: Brenda Paugh

Members of the public present: Mike Lykens

No Secretary’s Report

No Treasurer’s Report

Old Business:

1. Day of Caring at Hedrick Cemetery went well. There were 15 volunteers. Work at the cemetery was completed.

2. The State Cemetery Commission meeting was informative. Approximately 20 people were in attendance. Jeannie Regan-Dinius gave the program.

3. Farley Cemetery is still pending. Donna, Brenda, and Martha will check more when crops are off. Donna still has to contact the VA, but is waiting until other issues are settled.

4. Ken and Jeff completed work at Clear Springs Friends’ Cemetery. Joe will get a copy of the contract to Donna.

5. Ken is still working on cemetery GIS coordinates.

New Business:

1. Winter projects: check deeds for easements to isolated cemeteries; get display board from Mike Burch; investigate the possibility of making a book of Henry County cemetery history.

2. Ken will check on status of Holland Cemetery and what work needs to be done.

3. The Commission needs to be considering activities for the bicentennial.

4. The Christmas get-together will be Dec 2 @ 6:00 p.m.; place to be announced.

5. Joe Manis moved to have no further meetings until February, 2016; Martha Fraze seconded; motion carried.
